DEATH HOUSE APPEAL LOST

A couple who discovered their new home was the scene of a horrific murder have failed in their bid to get damages from the sellers.

Alan and Susan Sykes only found out about the killing through a television documentary.

They had no idea that a previous owner had butchered his 13-year-old adopted daughter and hid parts of her body around the house and garden.

Mr and Mrs Sykes could no longer bear living at the house they had bought for £87,000 in Wakefield, West Yorks, and sold it at a loss of £8,000.

They went to the Court of Appeal to seek damages from James and Alison Taylor-Rose who sold it to them in December 2000.

The couple were offered sympathy by one of the three judges hearing the case but were told the law as it stood put no obligation on vendors to disclose the history of a property.

They ruled that the Taylor-Roses had not been dishonest when they answered "no" to a question form asking: "Is there any information which you think the buyer may have a right to know?"

It was not until Mr and Mrs Sykes saw the Channel 5 documentary that they knew about what had happened in their home.

Both were traumatised and immediately moved out of the house which they put up for sale.

The TV documentary was about Dr Samson Perera, a dental biologist at Leeds University who murdered his adopted daughter, Nilanthie, in 1985.

Perera was given a life sentence. His wife Dammika, a teacher, was jailed for helping him cover up the crime.

OTHER MURDER HOUSES

There are several properties across Britain which have held morbid secrets behind their nondescript front doors.

25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester is perhaps the most infamous address in the country where Fred and Rose West buried nine of their female victims in the cellar and under the patio.

Demolition at Cromwell St

But the semi-detached house and its adjoining property have now been demolished and replaced with a pathway.

The name of Dennis Nilsen is sure make estate agents in north London nervous.

His victims were found buried in the back garden and under the floor boards of 195 Melrose Avenue, Cricklewood, and flushed down the lavatory of 23 Cranley Gardens, Muswell Hill.

The Melrose Avenue property has since been converted into flats and blessed by a priest.

10 Rillington Place in Notting Hill had the added attraction of being where John Christie murdered his wife and five other women during the 1940s.

Gruesome sightseeing trips around 10 Rillington Place (later renamed 10 Ruston Close) continued until the late 1970s when the whole decrepit street was torn down and rebuilt as Bartle Road.

Dr Hawley Crippen clearly was not thinking of the re-sale value of his home in Hilltop Crescent in Camden, north London, when he murdered his wife and buried her under the cellar in 1910.

Another property to miss in Camden will be 4 Hartland House, where Anthony Hardy killed three prostitutes in his one bedroom council flat.

Parts of his victims were found in a wheelie bin near the flat.

Camden council plans to gut the flat before letting it again - and offer counselling to potential tenants.

diary A weeklong electronic journal.

Tom Moore teaches sixth grade in the Morrissania area of the South Bronx.
and that's he's diary...

Two days before the start of our midwinter recess, a friend of mine, a fellow teacher, was punched in the face by a student, the son of a school aide. The incident has been handled badly by everyone. My friend waited two days to start the paper trail; the kid hasn't even been suspended yet. In fact, my friend might have him in his class tomorrow. He told me that when the kid was cocking his fist, he thought to himself, "I wonder if he would do this to Mr. Moore?"

I don't know. I've never been punched in the face. I've been pushed; I've had spitballs, chairs, garbage cans, pencils, chalk, crayons, and other stuff thrown at me. I've been threatened by children and adults with violence; I've been threatened by children and adults with lawsuits, dismissal, "letters in my file." I've been called "White Motherf--ker," "White-Out," "Chicken Tender," "Twinkie," "Gay," "White Boy," and "Racist." I've also learned that sometimes these taunts and epithets aren't meant to insult. The kids use these words among friends. I've learned how to react: Nothing attracts more insults than a wounded prig.

I love my job. I also love the regular vacations that my work provides. Tomorrow our vacation is over and I will have to readjust to my workday schedule—the routine that is the comforting structure upon which I build my week.

Teaching involves simultaneously managing hundreds of small tasks—everything from taking attendance to constantly monitoring each child's physical, mental, and emotional needs—so it's necessary to develop a very orderly approach to things. Tomorrow morning I will mechanically rise from bed at 6:23 a.m. (that's 6:15 plus eight minutes of snooze time, if you're wondering), perform my morning ablutions, make my coffee and prepare my lunch (a natural-peanut-butter sandwich and a Granny Smith apple, same thing I've eaten every day for the better part of two years), knot my tie, and then head out into the Astoria morning. This time of year, I feel lucky to be awake early enough to catch the sunrise out here in the big sky country of Queens. I will buy my paper from the guy dodging cars by the train station and head to the M60 bus to 125th Street. I will exchange looks with the other young teachers holding their canvas "Teaching Fellows" totes, all of us speechlessly agreeing, "Yes, six weeks 'till Easter vacation."

His lunch

Thursday is a half-day because we have parent-teacher conferences. We teachers will be available to the parents from noon to 3 and 6 to 8. We'll be handing out "Promotion in Doubt" letters, informing many parents that at best, their child should reconsider any summer plans, and at worst, their child might have to repeat the grade. I look forward to Thursday night, but not because I have a cruel streak. I enjoy meeting the parents, especially the parents who support their kids, bring them to libraries and museums, work overtime to get a computer. They're strong people and I admire them.

One girl in my class has, for years now, been failing and getting into all sorts of trouble: threatening classmates, cursing teachers, hiding under her desk. Since October, we've been trying to move her into a special-education class, but these things take time, despite—or maybe because of (depends on who you ask)—the restructuring of the schools. Her grandmother came to a planning meeting we held last week and before even saying hello said, "I want her in special ed." Everyone at the meeting—guidance counselors, psychologists, all of us sitting knee-to-knee in a tiny office—agreed with Grandma. It was a lucky coincidence that we also had a seat open in a special-ed class, so we don't have to wait until next year to move her, as would usually be the case. This girl, in spite of her troubles, has perfect attendance and is usually the first or second person to arrive for class. I wonder whose class she'll walk into tomorrow

So.. i guess no body in particular is walking down the aisle ...

Beyonce Has No Plans To Walk Down Aisle

Could it be that Grammy-licious Beyonce Knowles (news) won't end up being Mrs. Jay Z after all? RWDmag.com reports that, despite Jay-Z telling Lyor Cohen at his recent farewell bash that he planned to marry Beyonce. She claims that she has no immediate plans to walk down the aisle and has no idea who her ideal man is. The pair have been dating since singing together on the track titled "03 Bonnie & Clyde" in 2002, although both have always refused to publicly comment on their relationship.

Jay-Z made the surprise announcement of his plans to marry Beyonce at a January 28 record company party, during a speech directed at the then-departing Def Jam boss Lyon Cohen, saying, quote, "You've been one of the best friends I could have had ... Apart from this woman beside me, who I love and who I will marry very soon."

while someone dun intend to walk down the aisle.. , some one broke up

Sixpence None the Richer Splits

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Christian band Sixpence None The Richer, famed for the pop hit "Kiss Me," is calling it quits.

In a letter to fans published in CCM Magazine, principal members Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum announced that the group is disbanding after 10 years together. Nash recently had a baby and plans to devote time to her family. Slocum says he wants to travel and may go back to school.

Sixpence began its career in the Christian music community, then achieved mainstream success with the singles "Kiss Me" (a No. 2 hit on the Billboard Hot 100) and a cover of the La's' "There She Goes." Wrangling with a series of labels delayed the group's most recent album, "Divine Discontent," which was released in October 2002 on Reprise and Squint, a Word Records imprint.

Plans call for Word to issue an album in August containing B-sides from "Divine Discontent" and other material.

this is truly a miracle..

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A Labrador retriever has been found alive on an isolated cove of a Southeast Alaska island more than a month after its owner was given up for dead when his boat sank in rough seas.

Two local fishermen found the dog named Brick on Heceta Island several miles from the accident. The men had known the dog's owner, Greg Clark, who went down with his boat in late January.

Brick swam to the men's boat and was hauled aboard — underweight, with an injured leg, fur matted with tree sap, but wiggling with joy, according to friends of the fishermen.

The discovery of the 8-year-old dog last week sent a shock through the close-knit rain-forest community of mariners and loggers, who had given up hope of finding Clark, 48.

"I was blown away," said John Pugh, a friend of Clark who has custody of the animal.

The dog was starting to rebound, Pugh told the Anchorage Daily News. "He's hungry as hell and a little skinny, but he's doing all right."

Clark was lost after his 32-foot boat Katrina broke apart Jan. 22 on rocks near Cape Lynch on the west side of the island, among a cluster of islands within the 17 million-acre Tongass National Forest. Clark, a longtime beach logger who lived alone with half a dozen Labs and their pups, had been making a supply run into Craig from his home on Kosciusko Island when he radioed his boat had lost power.

With him was Brick, his constant companion, and a 2-month-old puppy Clark had planned to deliver to new owners in town.

A three-day search by local residents and Coast Guard crews found a rolled-up survival suit, part of the boat's stern and other debris, but no sign of Clark or his dogs.

Over the past month, people had resigned themselves that Clark and his dogs were gone, Pugh said. The animals left at home were adopted by Clark's brother in Oregon and friends in Alaska.

Then last Thursday, Kevin Dau — Pugh's partner in an oyster operation — was fishing for winter king salmon with his father off the northwestern coast of Heceta near the accident site. When the two men motored into Port Alice to anchor for the night, Dau saw a black animal on the beach.

"His father said, 'That's a wolf.' But Kevin said, 'No, that's Brick,' " Pugh said. "And he got out on the bow and started calling, 'Brick! Brick!'

Brick's survival alone on the thick, jungly island during harsh winter weather has amazed and moved local people, Pugh said.

"It's such a rural area, your friends are really your family out here, and Greg was family to all of us," he said. "Losing him, it's hard to explain to people how we really felt. He was such a unique person. It's hard to explain when you're having to search for him and you don't know what you're going to find. Then, after a month, to find Brick — it brings back a whole slew of feelings."

Jeesh, those four hot ladies from the City sure make being single look like a lot of fun. But for many singles, it can be a challenging time of feeling out of the loop, lonesome or even undesirable. But life in the solo lane doesn't have to be all about long faces and lonely nights. Instead, think of your dating downtime as time off for yourself, a period of personal revitalization and growth. And keep the faith — your love life will get hot and heavy again when the time is right. Meanwhile, be here now and make the very best of being single.

Singles, this time's for you. Take pleasure in being:

Unattached, but not unconnected. Even though you might be wishing for a scrumptious sweetie to go everywhere and do everything with, don't just sit home watching the cooking shows in the meantime. Spend time with friends, go out and have a blast, stay actively in touch with people you enjoy. Besides, the more you're out and about in the world, the more likely you are to cross paths with that future flame whose fate is to find you.

Solo, and sizzling. Even though there's nothing like a suggestive wink from a devoted paramour to make you feel extra sexy, true sexiness comes from within. Don't let your sensual side dress down and get dowdy during this temporary absence of well-deserved worship. Treat yourself like the Goddess of Love that you are. Wear your silks, paint your toenails red, peel yourself a grape. Radiate that glow of irresistible confidence, and it's guaranteed you won't stay single for long.

Continually evolving. While you're not out painting the town blue with your beau several nights a week, use your free time for yourself. With your attention focussed more inwardly right now, it's a great time to delve into something new and nourishing to the mind, body and spirit. Try yoga, a healthier diet, or take a night class in figure drawing. When at last you do meet your true love, he or she will be truly dazzled by your infectious joie-de-vivre.

A believer in love. Ever start to wonder if true love is just a myth? Or if it's just not in the cards for you in this lifetime? Nonsense. Love sweet love is alive and kicking, and everyone's invited to this party. In fact, the Internet has opened whole new worlds of possibility when it comes to finding yourself a really good match. Search for local singles and take a look at all the eligibles in your region. Get a friend to snap some great pictures of you looking fabulous, and post your own winning free profile. Get active in finding the love that is out there for you. And don't ever lose heart, because all good things take time.

made an interesting discovery today while listening to Madonna's Die another day..

look at the lyrics and thou shalt be enlightened

I'm gonna wake up, yes and no
I'm gonna kiss some part of
I'm gonna keep this secret
I'm gonna close my body now

I guess, die another day
I guess, die another day
I guess, die another day
I guess, die another day

I guess I'll die another day
(Another day)
I guess I'll die another day
(Another day)
I guess I'll die another day
(Another day)
I guess I'll die another day

Sigmund Freud
Analyze this
Analyze this
Analyze this

I'm gonna break the cycle
I'm gonna shake up the system
I'm gonna destroy my ego
I'm gonna close my body now

Uh, uh

I think I'll find another way
There's so much more to know
I guess I'll die another day
It's not my time to go

For every sin, I'll have to pay
I've come to work, I've come to play
I think I'll find another way
It's not my time to go

I'm gonna avoid the cliche
I'm gonna suspend my senses
I'm gonna delay my pleasure
I'm gonna close my body now

I guess, die another day
I guess I'll die another day
I guess, die another day
I guess I'll die another day

I think I'll find another way
There's so much more to know
I guess I'll die another day
It's not my time to go

Uh, uh

[Laugh]

I guess, die another day
I guess I'll die another day
I guess, die another day
I guess I'll die another day

Another day [x6]

Well.. this is one connection between Early childhood and Madonna.
what does madonna means by citing Sigmund Freud's name?
I dun really understand why she has to out sigmund freud's name in the song...
imagine Jean piaget, analyze this, analyze this, analyze this
so does it make more sense to put Sigmund Freud's name rather than Jean Piaget?

SPLITSVILLE FOR BARBIE AND KEN...

As much we expected.. the longest never getting married couple call it quits.

Barbie and Ken seen here in happier times.

Barbie and Ken 'Split'

Just like J.Lo and Ben, the romance is over for Barbie and Ken.

After 43 years as one of the world's prettiest pairs, the perfect plastic couple is breaking up. The couple's "business manager," Russell Arons, vice president of marketing at Mattel, said that Barbie and Ken "feel it's time to spend some quality time — apart."

"Like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance has come to an end," said Arons, who quickly added that the duo "will remain friends."

Arons denied that there was any truth to rumors that the breakup was linked to the Cali (as in California) Girl Barbie, arriving in stores now.

To better reflect her single status, Cali Barbie will wear board shorts and a bikini top, metal hoop earrings, and have a deeper tan.

This new style already has attracted a new admirer, Blaine the Australian boogie boarder.

Barbie — the most popular fashion doll in the world, according to toy maker Mattel — met Ken on the set of a TV commercial in 1961, and they have been inseparable ever since.

Arons hinted Wednesday that the separation may be partially because of Ken's reluctance to get married. All those bridal Barbie dolls in toy chests around the globe are really just examples of Barbie's wishful thinking, she explained.

Another possible factor is Barbie's career. The doll who was "born" Barbie Millicent Roberts in 1959 has been everything from a rock star to a military medic, and she's currently marketed in more than 150 countries. According to Mattel, every second, three Barbie dolls are sold somewhere in the world.

So where does that leave Ken? Said Arons: "He will head for other waves."

Gay Marriage Opponents File Suit in S.F.

SAN FRANCISCO - Accusing the mayor of trampling the law, conservative groups went to court Friday to challenge the issuing of same-sex marriage licenses in San Francisco, as hundreds more gay couples rushed to tie the knot before the opportunity slipped away

All day long, the marble passages beneath City Hall's ornate gold dome echoed with applause as one couple after another got hitched, promising to be "spouses for life." The weddings will continue on Valentine's Day (news - web sites) and through the long holiday weekend.

While it remains unclear what practical value the marriage licenses will carry, their symbolism was evident.

Emboldened by the marriage spree and the prospect of the nation's first legal same-sex marriages in Massachusetts on May 17, gay couples went to courthouses around the nation Thursday and Friday to demand the right to wed. They were quickly turned away.

At a hearing in California, Judge James L. Warren told lawyers for the conservative Alliance Defense Fund that court procedures require them to return Tuesday to properly make their request to block the marriages, which began Thursday with Mayor Gavin Newsom's blessing.

"Apparently, Mayor Newsom felt he's above the law and like a dictator, could simply dictate what the law should be," said Richard Ackerman, an attorney for the Campaign for California Families.

The county clerk issued hundreds of licenses to same-sex couples, many of whom then promptly got married in City Hall. The building was to remain open for more marriages Saturday in observance of Valentine's Day.

"I'm not interested as a mayor in moving forward with a separate but unequal process for people to engage in marriages," Newsom said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "The people of this city and certainly around the state are feeling that separate but unequal doesn't make sense."

San Francisco appears to be the first city in the nation to officially support same-sex marriage licenses.

Marriage commissioner Richard Ow, right, marries same-sex couple Jeff Whitaker, left, and Ray Sato, center, in the rotunda at City Hall in San Francisco, Friday, Feb. 13, 2004. In a political challenge to California law, city authorities continue to issue more same-sex marriage licenses. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

Hundreds of gay couples began lining up at 4 a.m. Friday, many of them rushing into town from other cities to get married before the courts could step in.

Mikko Alanne, 31, and his partner, Ari Solomon, 27, drove in overnight from West Hollywood, a six-hour trip. "This is the first step towards the state recognizing gay marriage," Allane said. Even though "we won't be recognized outside San Francisco, we are very excited."

The conservative groups wanted a Superior Court judge to order the county clerk not to issue any more licenses to same-sex couples, and to void any licenses already granted.

California law, as approved by the voters in 2000, defines marriage as a union of a man and a woman.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) and other state officials have avoided comment, but Attorney General Bill Lockyer's spokeswoman did note that California's constitution provides broader equal-protection rights than other states.

The San Francisco ceremonies occurred as Massachusetts lawmakers ended in a stalemate after two days of impassioned debate. They are considering a ban on gay marriage in response to a ruling by the state's high court that said same-sex couples have the right to marry. The Legislature will reconvene March 11.

Around the country, other gay couples were turned away by court clerks as Thursday's "National Freedom to Marry Day" protests continued into Friday. The protests have been held every Feb. 12 since 1998.

In Richmond, Va., eight couples clutching pink "bride" and blue "groom" applications were denied licenses as legislators three blocks away debated a bill affirming Virginia's ban on same-sex marriages.

"It's a heartbreaker to be rejected," said Mary Gay Hutcherson, who was accompanied by her partner of 10 years, Yolanda Farnum. "But it was empowering. I think we deserve a license from the state of Virginia. And I think someday we will get one."

They also protested in Ohio, where Gov. Bob Taft signed a law last week making it the 38th state to officially bar recognition of gay marriages and the second to deny benefits such as health insurance coverage to unmarried employees' partners. The Ohio law is considered one of the most far-reaching bans in the country.

"It's so easy for people who have something to tell others they can't have it," said Christopher Hoffman, who was turned away in Columbus with his partner of 16 months, Joshua Jacob Wiley. "We don't want to be `domestic partners.' We want to be husbands."

Same-Sex Couples Marry in San Francisco

By LISA LEFF, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO - City officials have issued marriage licenses to nearly 100 same-sex couples and could unite scores more while opponents are in court Friday seeking to block the nationally unprecedented nuptials.

While the practical value of the marriage licenses remains unclear, their symbolism was evident — especially on a day when lawmakers in Massachusetts debated a constitutional amendment that would strip gays and lesbians of court-ordered marriage rights. As mandated, they adjourned shortly after midnight Friday — but without reaching a consensus.

(Phyllis Lyon, left, 79, and Del Martin, 82, right, both of San Francisco and a couple for 51 years, hold up their marriage certificate outside City Hall after they were married in a civil ceremony in San Francisco, Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004. In a political challenge to California law, city authorities officiated at the marriage of a lesbian couple, then announced they would issue more same-sex marriage licenses.(AP Photo/Eric Risberg) )

San Francisco's newly elected mayor, Gavin Newsom, directed the county clerk to accept applications from gay and lesbian partners for the first time Thursday — an act of political and legal defiance aimed at challenging California's ban on same-sex marriages.

So many couples took the city up on its surprise offer that, by late afternoon, overwhelmed officials told new applicants to return Friday. In all, the clerk's office issued 95 marriage licenses to same-sex partners Thursday, and 87 couples took their vows on the spot.

"Even people who are anti-gay marriage might shift their thinking now and realize it's most harmful to take something away when someone already has it," said Virginia Garcia, 40, after wedding Sheila Sernovitz, 50, her partner of 14 years.

The city's bold move, however, caused an outcry from elected officials and groups opposed to marriage rights for same-sex couples.

One group, Campaign for California Families, said it would ask a Superior Court judge Friday for a temporary restraining order that would enjoin the city from granting any more licenses. The organization is also seeking a ruling from the court declaring the city's actions illegal.

"Those who received the marriage licenses need to know that they are worthless," said Mathew Staver, whose Florida-based law firm, Liberty Counsel, is representing the plaintiffs. "We are confident that they will be invalidated as soon as a judge is able to issue an order."

It was because of a court order that the Massachusetts Legislature convened its constitutional convention, which began Wednesday. The state's Supreme Judicial Court in November ruled it was unconstitutional to ban gay marriage.

Gay and lesbian advocates see the lawmakers' failure to pass an amendment approving civil unions as at least a temporary victory. They condemned the idea of civil unions, arguing it would revert gay people to second-class citizenship after a hard-won court victory.

"We've beaten back three amendments to discriminate," said Sen. Jarrett Barrios, an openly gay Democrat from Cambridge. "We'll see what comes next."

Like their counterparts on the West Coast, conservatives in Massachusetts stood firm.

"The democratic process has been stymied," said Gerald D'Avolio, executive director of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference. "The people at this point have no way to respond to the (court) decision. We had a lot of people who wanted this Legislature, this convention, to give them something to vote on, and that was marriage between a man and a woman."

San Francisco officials tried to keep the first marriage — between longtime lesbian activists Phyllis Lyon, 79, and Del Martin, 83 — confidential so they could complete it before any court intervention. The pair, who will celebrate 51 years together on Valentine's Day (news - web sites), were wed by San Francisco Assessor Mabel Teng at 11:10 a.m. in a closed-door ceremony.

The secrecy that surrounded the Lyon-Martin wedding ended up being unnecessary since California courts were closed in observance of Lincoln's Birthday. It also meant that many couples started their days with no idea they would wed by evening.

As word spread, they rushed to City Hall, most dressed casually in jeans with hastily assembled witnesses, and holding hands as they waited in a long line to pay their $82 license fee. The marble passages beneath City Hall's ornate golden dome echoed with applause as jubilant couples breezed through brief ceremonies, promising to be "spouses for life" instead of husband and wife.

"There is a part that doesn't feel romantic at all, but obviously it feels historic," said Guillermo Guerra, 29, who married Andrew Parsons, 39, his partner of eight years.

San Francisco officials acknowledged they might have a long court fight ahead of them, but insisted that the licenses were legally binding, saying they would immediately confer new benefits in areas ranging from health coverage to funeral arrangements. At the same time, the freshly revised marriage applications they issued encouraged "same-gender couples" to "seek legal advice regarding the effect of entering into marriage."

"Marriage of lesbian and gay couples may not be recognized as valid by any jurisdiction other than San Francisco, and may not be recognized as valid by any employer," the disclaimer said.

Assemblyman Mark Leno, who shared officiating duties at City Hall with the assessor and four of her deputies, formally introduced legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage throughout California. "It is a tandem challenge," said Leno, a Democrat from San Francisco. "One will be heard in a judicial setting, and the other in a legislative setting."

Other state officials, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), shied away from commenting on the events. Attorney General Bill Lockyer said through a spokeswoman he hasn't been asked to issue an opinion on the legality of same-sex marriages under California law.

But Lockyer has asked his civil rights enforcement section to review how Massachusetts' legal debate might apply to California law.

"California's constitution provides broader equal protection rights than other states," spokeswoman Hallye Jordan said.

The Massachusetts Legislature, to undo the high court ruling by rewriting the state constitution, must pass an amendment with at least 101 votes in two consecutive legislative sessions — this year and in 2005-06 — before it winds up on the ballot before voters in November 2006.

Thirty-eight states and the federal government have approved laws or amendments barring the recognition of gay marriage.

the 7 multiple intelligences.. Multiple Intelligences - Using the Brain to Teach

According to Harvard University professor Dr. Howard Gardner, there are eight multiple intelligences that allow us to process information and problem-solve. Just as there are different personalities, there are different types of minds. Each person has a unique combination of each intelligence. Because of this, it is vital that educators teach their discipline in as many methods and styles as possible.
Gardner's theory of seven multiple intelligences is well documented in his 1983 book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. A decade later, an eighth intelligence was researched and added to the collection.

1. Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence refers to the skill of interpreting and producing language as well as the capacity to grasp concepts associated with language acquisition. Reading aloud, writing plays, debating, and working with phonetic patterns are activities that can strengthen verbal-linguistic intelligence.

2. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence refers to the skill of using the body to create things, explain ideas, and problem-solve. Choreographing a dance or using hands-on materials encourages the intelligence of bodily-kinesthetics.

3. Mathematical-Logical Intelligence involves the ability to understand systems, reason deductively or inductively, and to manipulate figures and equations. Solving mysteries, formulating word problems, and conducting lab experiments involves the use of this intelligence.

4. Spatial Intelligence involves the ability to create visual or spatial relationships in relation to the physical world. Reading charts, sculpting, or creating visual displays enhance this intelligence. Pilots, artists, and architects display a strength in spatial intelligence.

5. Interpersonal Intelligence refers to the skill of working well with others. Effectively understanding people's goals, emotions, and intentions can be accomplished in small group work. Allowing students to act as the teacher can also develop this intelligence.

6. Intrapersonal Intelligence refers to one's capacity to understand one's self: motivations, feelings, and strengths. Providing opportunities for students to silently read, write in a journal, or pursue personal goals cultivates this intelligence.

7. Musical Intelligence involves the awareness and understanding of rhythm, pitch, and pattern. Bridging a connection between the sound of music and emotional response is a strength of this intelligence. Studying tongue twisters, song lyrics, and musical notes can develop this intelligence.

8. Naturalist Intelligence refers to the skill of distinguishing and analyzing relationships between plants and animals. Caring for pets and gardens, or using telescopes and binoculars nurtures the naturalist intelligence. This intelligence allows an individual to understand a balance of nature in the fields of agriculture, biology, and paleontology.

Imagination and hard work are very necessary to present materials within different intelligences. When preparing lessons, keep in mind the dynamics of students in your classroom. Every member of your class can make a connection, understand the importance of learning, and experience success.

As a result of using different intelligences, students develop independence, improve their behavior, model leadership skills, retain information, and refine problem-solving skills. The role of an educator also changes as students grow and develop. Teachers become more facilitative and resourceful rather than directive. Various approaches to teaching develop new perspectives and open minds.

Experimenting and learning about multiple intelligences can be a resourceful tool in problem-solving techniques. When trying to analyze, build, and understand a concept or problem, different parts of our brains are used, mixing intelligences until a solution is reached. Real world situations require different strengths, perspectives, and methods of thinking as well. Relying on all capacities of our mental being can ultimately create personal achievement and success, both in and outside of the classroom.
