The Basics
Are you a dangerous driver? 10 ways to tell

advertisement

Bad habits range from road rage to eating while driving. Compare yourself with these accident magnets from Boston. Do you see yourself here?

By Insure.com

Surely you've seen them on the road: They're swerving in and out of lanes, ignoring rules of the road, and engaging in other rude -- and dangerous -- behavior. Or maybe you are that bad driver?

Compare yourself with a focus group of 30 drivers from Boston who have collectively been involved in 84 accidents over the past three years and received 49 speeding tickets, 39 moving violations and 92 parking tickets. Take a look at these questions to find out if you fit the profile.

When you reach a stop sign and no one is coming from another direction, do you roll through instead of stopping? An overwhelming majority (87%) of the bad drivers say they should be able to speed, go through stop signs, and break other driving rules and regulations as long as no one gets hurt.

Do you talk on the cell phone while driving instead of pulling off and stopping to talk? A total of 77% of bad drivers say they do this either frequently or occasionally. Only 13% say they never talk on a cell phone while driving.

Do you take your coffee and muffin or other food and drink on the road with you, driving with one hand while using the other to eat? Some 60% of those in the study say they either frequently or occasionally eat while they're driving. In fact, several of the participants say they have spilled drinks and attempted to clean up the spill while driving.

If you're out shopping in a crowded area and are looking for a parking space, do you become so focused on your search that you lose sight of the cars and pedestrians around you? More than half of the participants say that when they're trying to find a parking space in a crowded area, they can become so focused that they become oblivious to other drivers and pedestrians and often get into accidents, whether on the street or in a parking lot.

Do you hate driving behind SUVs or other large vehicles that obstruct your view? More than 60% of bad drivers say they are frustrated driving behind SUVs because they are wide and tall and block their vision. In fact, more than 70% believe SUVs should be required to drive in a separate lane on the highway.

Does your driving change when you go into areas with higher police presence? Nearly all of the participants strongly agree with the statement that they drive more carefully when they know police are in the area. In addition, most participants say they check their rearview mirrors regularly for police cars.

Does listening to music while you drive sometimes leave you oblivious to all but the music? Some 93% of participants say they listen to the radio while driving, and 73% of them listen to music. Most say listening to the radio has often caused them to become distracted and in some cases they say listening to loud music has caused them to be more aggressive on the highway.

Do you find yourself in confrontations on the road, either through verbal arguments or hand gestures, because of either your own driving habits or the habits of others? While 87% of the bad drivers consider themselves at least somewhat courteous drivers if not very courteous, at least half also admit making obscene or rude gestures or comments to other drivers, particularly those who cut in front of them on the highway. Participants also say, however, that they appreciate a thank-you gesture for letting another driver into their lane, and often give a wave of thanks themselves when they cut into traffic.

Does your "work hard, play hard" lifestyle leave you sleepy behind the wheel at times? About 50% of those in the study say they have almost fallen asleep while driving and an additional 10% say they have wanted to shut their eyes while driving and almost did. The study found that most participants lead a busy lifestyle that sometimes leaves them sleep-deprived.

When you're driving with passengers, do you turn around to talk, taking your eyes and mind off the road? Nearly all group members acknowledged that they are distracted when they have passengers in their vehicles, and most say during conversations they'll turn their heads and stop paying attention to the road. This held true especially for drivers with small children.
If your answers agree with the answers from the focus group, it's likely you tend to be a more aggressive driver than average. Like members of the study, you may also pay more for your auto insurance. Within the study group, 53% pay a surcharge on their auto insurance because of their driving records.

!Outgoing, confident, and a menace
These bad drivers have other characteristics that you may recognize in your own life. Most say they lead very stressful lives without enough time to accomplish all their activities in a day. They all consider themselves either somewhat or very outgoing, and all have a fair to great amount of confidence in the way they behave. And 90% say they've told a "little white lie" to protect someone's feelings.

The group was broken down into three age groups, from 18 to 25 years old, 26 to 45 years old, and 46 to 59 years old. There were 19 men and 11 women in the study, commissioned by RightFind Technology, a company developing new products to help insurers make better decisions on auto insurance rates for specific drivers.

While the study is based on a small group and should be considered a hypothesis rather than a conclusion, "our study identified several personality attributes that seem clearly linked to accident involvement," says Donald Bashline, one of the owners of RightFind. "Witnessing these focus groups was a revelation."

EXTRA EXTRA COME READ ABOUT IT!!!!! HA THE REASONS TO BENNIFER'S BREAK UP...

Bennifer: The Aftermath
The scoop on the Ben and Jen split. Plus, Ashton's engagement rumors

By Kat Giantis
MSN Entertainment
Jan. 23, 2004

The positive reviews are finally rolling in for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez -- the end of their relationship is, sadly, winning raves. As we all know by now, the beast known as Bennifer is no more. So what the heck happened? Despite Lopez's rep asking that everyone "respect her privacy" during "this difficult time," the endless speculation as to what ultimately doomed their tabloid-bait romance has begun

As a public service, we've provided a rundown of the breakup reports, which we're guessing will soon be followed by the inevitable reconciliation rumors:

* Us Weekly, which first reported the split, says the end of the "Gigli" co-stars 18-month-long love affair came on January 20, just days after Affleck returned from the Sundance Film Festival, where he told reporters, "Everything's going along fine. We're good." His remarks were in response to rumors that trouble was a-brewin' after Jen met up with former flame Sean "P. Diddy" Combs in Miami while Ben was in Europe (the rap mogul has insisted it was completely innocent). A few days later, J. Lo was spotted without her custom-made, 6.1-carat Harry Winston pink diamond engagement ring.

* Us says the decision to part was mutual, a claim disputed by the New York Post. "She broke up with him. It's definitely not the other way around," a source tells the paper. "They're just not comfortable. She doesn't want a third divorce under her belt."

* Blame for the bust-up is being placed on Affleck's inability to settle down. According to Us, Lopez was anxious to marry and start a family with the teetotaling but hard-partying, gambling-loving Oscar-winner, and wasn't thrilled when he was snapped Jan. 10 with buddy Matt Damon surrounded by a bevy of lovelies in a German nightclub. "She was tired of waiting for him to come around," a source tells the magazine.

* Jen isn't staying secluded in the wake of the split. A ringless Lopez (still no word on who gets custody of the rock) was spotted Wednesday night dining in Los Angeles with her business reps. "She was laughing and talking the entire night," a spy tells Us. "She looked more relieved than upset." The megastar plans to attend Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, but won't be walking the red carpet.

* Ben was also out and about Wednesday night, reportedly gambling with pals in L.A. into the pre-dawn hours, but he apparently wasn't as perky as his ex. "Ben looked really, really tired," an eyewitness tells Us. "He looked down." The New York Post reports that when paparazzi caught up with him at a pizza place in West Hollywood Thursday afternoon, he refused to comment on his former fiancée, joking, "Look, there goes Michael Jackson." Adds his rep to the New York Daily News, "We don't want to get dragged into quicksand. Everybody wants a war. It's not happening from our side."

HA! BRITNEY SPEARS ACTING AGAIN?!

Britney Knocks on "Door"
Britney Spears apparently had so much fun playing a bride that she's ready to tackle more substantial roles. Variety reports that the pop starlet has inked a deal to star in and produce "Door to Door," the story of a Michigan teen (based on the book by Tobi Tobin) with Hollywood dreams who moves to Los Angeles, where she hooks up with a movie star and lands a job working the door at the town's hottest club. As the trade explains, "Suddenly doors open for her." Oy. Anyway, Spears, who made her big screen debut in the mixed bag "Crossroads," is also eyeing roles in "The Dukes of Hazzard" and the Tim Allen comedy "In the Pink."

erm... next manicure?! -_-.. i dun think so.......

You're an earthy goddess with an appreciation of soothing shades. You're not into synthetic hues—not when nature is filled with all the colors you need. Try these polish options for your next manicure:

Maybelline's Ultimate Wear gives you longer-lasting polish in great shades. You'll love their beach-inspired color, Silver Sand ($4). For a neutral with extra kick that dries quickly, try Revlon's Top Speed Chrome's Khaki Chrome ($4).

Make like a tree with Haze ($8), a leaf-colored polish from M.A.C. Or, try Lancome's soft pink polish, Harmony ($14.50).

Sociable ($10), the shimmery nude shade from Tony & Tina brings exciting luster to simplicity. Urban Decay earns extra cool points for their pearly mocha shade, Complex ($9). And Nicole by O.P.I. delivers an edgier shade of brown with Big City Girl ($10).

i think i still prefer the esprit's shimmer green..
it matches so well with black.ehheehehe
Dressing for the Job Interview

Well, your resume worked and now you have an appointment for the all important job interview. You have done your homework. You are confident that you can answer anything the interviewer throws at you. Finally the big day arrives and the final important choice must be made. What should you wear?
It is no secret that how you look has everything to do with the first impression you make. A first impression is made in the first 27 seconds. If you are too formal in your appearance, you might give the impression of being rigid and stuffy. If you are too casual, you may send the signal that you do not take the interview or the job very seriously.

Begin by talking to employees of your potential new employer and find out what the dress code is and how seriously management takes it. If you can't find out this information, you should choose clothing that is professional in the impression it gives.

If you do not already own clothing that will work on an interview, you should go to a store where you can get good advice from the sales person. Be prepared to have the clothes tailored. No human being completely fits in clothes that are off the rack. To make the best impression the clothes must be altered to fit and accent your best features.

The following ideas can never be neglected:
Look clean and neat. Make sure that your hair is done appropriately. Women - do not wear wild hairdo's Men - get a trim of head and facial hair.
Do not wear a perfume or cologne as many people are allergic. Bathing with a good quality bath soap will leave a light scent. You will be nervous and a gentle scent can mask the perspiring you may be doing. An unscented antiperspirant can be used.
Cover any tattoos and avoid gaudy jewelry. Definitely limit pierced jewelry to ears only. Do not wear nose or tongue jewelry

MEN

Wear a suit or sport jacket with color coordinated trousers
The color should be neutral or dark - blue, black or gray is best
Wear a tie - even if you will never wear one after you get the job
Shoes should be leather - clean and polished - black is best
Make sure your nails are trimmed and that they are clean.

WOMEN

Wear a classic suit or a simple dress with a jacket. This is not a time to be provocative or sexy. Some appropriate colors are navy blue, black, dark green, dark red, burgundy, or gray.
Dress in a higher style that the position calls for but do not attempt to out dress everyone there.
Avoid wearing clothes that are tight, revealing or trendy. It may be the very latest fashion but it will not impress the interviewer

Fingernails should be trimmed to a length that doesn't leave an observer wondering how you keep from stabbing yourself. The polish should be closer to a color your mom might wear that to a color that your kid sister would go for.
Even after you are successful in getting the job, you should continue to pay attention to your wardrobe. Interviewing for that first job is only the beginning in the role clothing will play in your career.
You should regularly add pieces made of high quality, long wearing fabrics. It is best to buy separates that you can mix and match with the pieces that you already own. Each piece you buy adds to the variety of looks you can achieve. You may ask why this is important? The reason is that even after you have the job you sought, you might like to be considered for advancement and promotion. The impression you leave on the job every day will be added to your performance when the boss looks around for someone to promote

Ten Surefire Ways to Tick Off Your Coworkers
Let's face it, not everyone gets along perfectly. To be successful in your work, you at least need the respect and support of others—your customers, suppliers, coworkers and management. But sometimes, despite your best efforts to win their support, bad habits creep into your daily work life and drive others crazy. Here are ten surefire ways to make sure your efforts to win their support don't backfire. If any sound familiar, you could be leaving your coworkers fuming.

1. Is it always all about you?
Are you preoccupied with your own career path and looking good at the expense of others? Do you put others down while you pump yourself up? Instead, conduct yourself in such a way that other people will want to see you succeed-- let their genuine support and admiration of who you are pull you to success.

2. Answering cell phone calls during meetings.
A surefire way to aggravate people is to consistently respond to calls, emails and pagers when in conversation with others. This sends a message that they are less important than the caller. Let the calls go and return them when your current conversation is over. If you are expecting an urgent call, alert those present. They will appreciate that you value their time and that you stay focused on matters at hand.

3. Sending voicemails that go on and on and on.
At the end of a voice message, replay it and hear how you sound. Difficulty in getting to the point? Just like giving a speech - state your objective or main message first and follow it with brief, supporting sub-points. Some people prefer voicemail, some email - each workplace has its own expectations.

4. Acting like a bureaucrat.
Do you drag out turnaround times and play control games? Do you create obstacles or barriers for others to do their work? Making mountains out of molehills is another surefire way to alienate people. Teach people how to navigate your organization efficiently, knowing when to stick with the rules and when to break them.

5. Reading the newspaper or hammer on your laptop during training sessions or meetings.
Yes, there are way too many meetings and you've got more important things to do. Yet doing non-relevant tasks when there is a set agenda sends a clear message that this event or these people are unimportant to you. Instead, be fully focused - chances are if you completely engage, you will make important contributions while you show you are a committed team player.

6. "I'm like, ya know . . ."
You are your words even more so in virtual relationships. You may be communicating with people worldwide who know you only by the sound of your voice or the tone of your emails. Become conscious of how you use language and stop communicating in ways that cause you to sound inexperienced or unprofessional. Ask those you trust and respect for feedback.

7. Doing your bills at the office.
Whether you are paying your bills, planning your wedding, or placing an online order for a special gift, avoid doing them on office time. People understand short personal calls and respect emergencies, but they don't appreciate seeing you get paid to manage your life.

8. Skirting around the dress code.
Ask ten companies to define business casual and you have ten different definitions. Dressing for work has never been more complicated - especially if you work at multiple locations. Prioritize matching your customer's dress code and if visiting more than one on a given day and the codes conflict, go for a classic, neutral look and be prepared to flex - adding or losing a jacket or tie between locations.

9. Taking it too easy on telecommute days.
Run a few errands and throw in a load of laundry? Hey, you're a hard worker and deserve work-life balance. Telecommuting can be a tremendous win-win but if you stretch it to its limits, you may blow the policy for yourself and others. Meet your deadlines, be readily available during business hours, and do great work -- skip the temptation to make it appear like you are working but you're really not.

10. Acting unethically.
Make sure you are clear on your organization's ethics policies and have the courage and conviction to uphold them. It's easy to draw the line on major violations but watch for the subtle ways you may be pulling others in the wrong direction to achieve goals—massaging numbers or data, violating copyright, or providing misleading information. Raise the ethics bar high and hold yourself and others to it.

28 Small Changes That Will Make a Big Difference

When you were little and first learned to tie your shoes, someone taught you how to do it by breaking it down into smaller steps. First tie a knot. Then make the loops. Now tie the bow.

Splitting any task up into stages helps it seem more manageable, and gets you to goal quicker. The same goes for weight loss.

As you accomplish each "mini-goal," you'll feel like a winner. That sense of accomplishment is great motivation for meeting more mini-goals, and more, until suddenly you're at the weight you've always wanted.

"Making small changes one at a time is a great strategy," agrees Howard Rankin, Ph. D., a South Carolina psychologist. "It's not overwhelming, and it results in a slower, more steady weight loss."

Remember: When it comes to weight loss, slow and steady wins the race. It's the pace that will help you get to your goal, then stay there.

Do Sweat the Small Stuff
A bunch of small changes add up to big results. Maybe cutting the cream out of your coffee seems like a small feat to you. But once you've got that down you can add another small feat, then another.

"Baby steps are the way to go," said one WeightWatchers.com user. "Especially when you're just starting the plan. There seem to be so many things to do, it's overwhelming. Little things become habits, and eventually the whole process doesn't seem so overwhelming."

We asked people like you — on the WeightWatchers.com Message Boards and in Meetings rooms — what small steps they've taken in order to see their way toward their weight goals. This is what they said ...

... About Small Eating Changes

Water, water, water, water. (Your skin will look great, too!)
Order half portions at restaurants, or share a full portion with somebody. Or ask for a "to-go" container when you order your food, and pack up half the portion before you even start eating.
Cut back on butter and mayo.
Limit fried foods to once or twice per week.
Use less or no sugar in your coffee or tea.
Replace ground beef with "Boca" products or ground turkey.
Try at least one new food every week. If you're bored with what you're eating, you're more likely to give up.
Eat fresh, raw veggies with sandwiches instead of chips.
Measure your portions until you're sure you know what a cup, a half-cup, and a tablespoon look like. This will help you practice portion control, an essential key to weight-loss success.
Try not to drink high-calorie beverages.
Dip your fork in a side of salad dressing before each bite, instead of pouring it directly on your salad. You'll find that you are satisfied with much less than you usually put on.
Find healthy alternatives to all your favorite foods.
If you don't really love it, don't eat it.
Never eat out of a bag or box. Take out a measured/counted quantity of food and put it in a bowl. This way, you know exactly how much you're having.
Always eat something for breakfast.
Read food labels. Check serving sizes.
Add vegetables to everything.
Plan meals in advance; use that information to make out a complete shopping list.
Give food to guests to take home.
Write down everything you eat and drink, without fail.
Plan ahead for special occasions by accounting for higher-calorie foods before you eat them.

Making Pizza at Home

Making Pizza at Home
Don't think you have to kiss pizza good-bye just because you're on a diet. Homemade pizza doesn't have to be hard on the waistline, and you might be surprised how easy it is to make. Start with pita bread or a bagel, and it doesn't even need to be time-consuming. We've got some great tips for enjoying this American staple, from choosing a crust to selecting delectable toppings.

Putting Together a Pizza Pie
Let's start with four simple crust ideas:

Stop in at your local pizza joint and ask if you can buy some unbaked dough. You'll get restaurant-quality yeast dough that's already risen - ready to stretch, roll, top and bake. (You can also buy pre-mixed unbaked dough in most supermarkets.)
Use whole-wheat pita rounds as crusts. Don't split them; just spoon sauce and toppings over them and cook them right on a baking sheet.
Split onion or garlic bagels in half and scoop out the doughy filling. Hollowed out, these make great vehicles for your delicious toppings and sauce.
Make your own homemade yeast dough with whole-wheat flour. Try the following recipe:

Whole-Wheat Pizza Dough

Makes one 12-inch pizza crust.

1/2 cup warm (105°F-110°F) water

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 package active dry yeast

1 cup whole-wheat flour

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

advertisement

Put the warm water, oil and salt in a small bowl and sprinkle in the yeast. Let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
Combine both flours in a food processor. With the machine running, pour the yeast mixture through the feed tube. After the dough forms a ball, turn out onto a lightly floured counter. Knead briefly until smooth and elastic.
Spray a large bowl with nonstick spray; put the dough in the bowl. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Punch down dough and roll into a 12-inch circle. Spray a nonstick cookie sheet with nonstick spray. Place the dough on the tray and top as desired. Bake until light brown and crunchy, 12 to 15 minutes.

A few words about tomato sauce and cheese:

Jarred pizza sauce is often full of fat and sugar. Try fat-free/sugar-free pasta sauce - just whisk in a little tomato paste to thicken it.
Excessive cheese does not a pizza make, and it adds lots of calories. A pizza without cheese can be delicious, especially when topped with fresh veggies. If you do opt for cheese, buy a good-quality one and use it sparingly.

Ten New Ideas for Pizza Toppings

Pimiento, Goat Cheese and Spinach Pizza.

Checkerboard dough with baby spinach leaves.
Place jarred pimiento strips on top of the leaves, and dot with soft low-fat goat cheese.

Zucchini and Ham Pizza.
Cover crust thinly with prepared pizza sauce (as indicated above).
Shred one large green zucchini; squeeze out all moisture.
Toss with finely diced, low-fat ham; sprinkle on dough.
Top with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, then bake.

Shrimp Nacho Pizza.
Spread a thin layer of salsa over the crust.
Cover with cooked, peeled shrimp.
Sprinkle shredded low-fat cheddar cheese on top.
Dot with fat-free sour cream after baking.
Salad Pizza.
Spray crust with nonstick spray and sprinkle evenly with your favorite salt-free herb blend.
Bake without any toppings until browned and crisp, then top with your favorite salad, dressed with fat-free vinaigrette.

Garden Pizza.
Cover crust with chopped, frozen mixed vegetables (thawed) before baking. Bake.
Sprinkle with balsamic vinegar and, if desired, extra-virgin olive oil before serving.

BBQ Chicken Pizza.
Cover crust with a thin layer of BBQ sauce.
Sprinkle chopped cooked chicken breast, chopped red onion, minced cilantro and shredded smoked mozzarella (optional) over top before baking.

Fajita Pizza.
Top crust with thinly sliced onion and red bell peppers.
Sprinkle canned, chopped green chiles and sliced, cooked chicken breast over pizza before baking.

Hawaiian Pizza.

Drain 1 large can pineapple rings.
Place rings on crust.
Sprinkle with chopped Canadian bacon, thinly sliced scallions, and reduced-fat Swiss cheese (optional) before baking.

Turkey Club Pizza.
Cover crust with thinly sliced tomatoes.
Crumble cooked turkey bacon and chopped turkey breast over top.
Bake.
Toss shredded iceberg with fat-free vinaigrette then spread onto pizza.

Dessert Pizza.
Spread fat-free hot fudge or caramel sauce thinly on dough; cover with sliced bananas and bake.
Let cool 5 minutes before serving.

okay.... this is how britney's marriage came about :

For some guys, winning $100 at the blackjack tables is enough to call a trip to Las Vegas successful, but Jason Allen Alexander really hit the jackpot. So how did this nice-guy football player from Louisiana get pop's biggest sexpot to say "I do"? By plying her with alcohol? By disguising himself as Madonna? Nope. Apparently all he had to do was show Britney "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" to get her in the mood and then keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. Here's how it all went down:

New Year's Eve

After ringing in the New Year at the Palms nightclubs Rain and Ghost Bar (a night of drinking and dancing that saw Britney rubbing elbows with Kobe Bryant and his wife), Spears returns to the "Real World" Suite at the Palms, where she is registered under the name Alotta Warmheart.

Thursday, January 1

Evening
Britney returns to Rain, where she is seen "getting frisky" with a number of people, including her eventual husband, Jason Allen Alexander. She also puts on a dance show in the VIP section and kisses one of her female dancers.

Friday, January 2

Evening
After going to see "Mona Lisa Smile" with friends, Spears hits the Ghost Bar again and retires to her room.

Saturday, January 3

Early morning
Britney watches "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in her room with Jason, and then the two decide to marry for the hell of it.

3:30 a.m.
The pair take the Palms' stretch limo with a hotel bellhop to the Little White Wedding Chapel, where they're told they need a marriage license.

4:30 a.m.
Spears goes to the Clark County Courthouse, provides proof of age and her Social Security number, and buys a marriage license. It takes 10 minutes to process her request, and she and Alexander become one of 341 couples to receive marriage licenses in Las Vegas that day.

5 a.m.
The two marry in a $70, seven-minute ceremony that includes the wedding march played on a boom box. The event is videotaped by a wall-mounted camera.

Later that morning
Back at the Palms, Alexander goes to his room, but his new wife goes dancing again.

Afternoon
Palms owner George Maloof hooks Spears up with lawyer David Chesnoff, who prepares annulment papers.

4:30 p.m.
The newlyweds sign annulment papers.

Evening
A wedding reception of sorts is held at the Palms' N9NE Steakhouse, which Lance Bass attends.

That night
Alexander leaves Las Vegas, and Spears goes back to Rain.

Sunday, January 4

Spears leaves Las Vegas.

These Stars Have Class (the school kind!)
Article provided by The CollegeBound Network
A celebrity's life may seem to be all glitz and glamour, but for these celebs, the daily grind once meant going to school like the rest of us. Here's what they have to say about their school days.

Claire Danes on juggling college and her acting career:

"I was very ambitious and optimistic when I started school--I assumed that I could just go to school and make a movie every summer, like clockwork. What was I thinking? Life does not work that way."

Actor Jack Black on his college days:

I was a theater major. It was important to go because if I didn't, I'd still be wondering if there was something I missed out on. I met some friends and it was fun--I was doing school plays, and then I did my own play with some friends. That's when I realized I could do it on my own.

Mila Kunis of That 70's Show, on her high school experience:

When I started attending school, my show had already started airing so people knew me as 'that girl from That 70's Show.' It's a little hard because they'd be like, 'Oh, she's on TV.' People always stereotype actresses only because they've never been acquainted with one. I have [made] friends there who have opened up a little to me. The true friends I still have [I had] from before high school. I don't go to high school to socialize. I go to learn."

Actor Seth Green, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, on high school:

"All of high school was funny and embarrassing. I think I was humiliated on a daily basis until I decided to stop trying to fit in and start concentrating on my grades. I almost failed ninth grade, but my vice principal gave me a second shot. From the 10th-12th grade, I made the honor roll."

Pop singer and actor Christina Milian on college:

I did go to college for a little while, but I became really busy with music. I went half the semester and the other half I got too busy. In the future, I would love to go to college. There are a lot of things I want to do in the future other than being a recording artist or actress. I would love to direct some films, write, own a couple businesses, and own a record label. I'd love to take some business classes.

Jazz pianist and singer Peter Cincotti on attending college and making records:

"It's been very difficult juggling my student life [at Columbia University] and my jazz career. One week I'll have to study harder on my schoolwork, and vice versa--but the deans at the university are helping me through it."

hey.. anyone needs an university scholarship.. strange but true.... these kind of scholarships are offered...

Thanks to inheriting Dad's klutz gene, you're hardly the star of the basketball team. And, because you've spent countless nights on the court trying to defy genetics and improve your jump shot, your grades fall just short of honor-roll status. Under these circumstances, your chances of getting a sports or academic scholarship to college seem slim. So where does that leave you?

At the risk of sounding like a Pollyanna, everyone has something special about them. What you lack in athletic or scholastic talent can be made up in other ways...

1. If you've got the height of a basketball player but don't play killer hoops, you're still not out of the running for a scholarship. Males 6'2" or taller and females 5'10" or higher qualify for the Tall Clubs International Scholarship. Write an essay on "What Being Tall Means to Me," and vie for $1,000 at http://www.tall.org.

2. If you're bummed you missed out on a "Best Dressed" nomination in the yearbook, make up for it by entering the Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck on Prom Contest. You and a date must attend prom wearing complete attire or accessories made from duct tape! First place winners get a $2,500 scholarship and a $2,500 cash prize goes to the school who hosted the prom. Go to http://www.ducktapeclub.com.

3. Remember how tiresome it was being a kindergarten lefty and using right-handed scissors? Well, all your suffering has finally paid off. Juniata College (Huntingdon, PA) offers up to $1,000 to two left-handed students each year. Call 814-641-3142

4. Calling all...duck callers? Yes, the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest awards a $1,500 scholarship to the winner. First runner-up gets $500, second runner-up gets $300, and third runner-up gets $200. Call 870-673-1602.

5. See? This scholarship stuff is as easy as pie. Apple, that is. First-prize winners of the Culinary Institute of America's (Hyde Park, NY) All-American Apple Pie Recipe Contest get a $25,000 scholarship to the school. Second and third prizes are $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships. Call 800-CULINARY.

6. You may want to reconsider your decision to dismiss applying to grandma's alma mater. Hood College's (Frederick, MD) Heritage Scholarship is awarded to freshman or transfer students with a parent or grandparent who attended Hood as an undergrad for at least one full year. If accepted, your first year of college will only cost what they paid their freshman year. That means if grandma only paid $300 for her first year back in 1941, so will you! Check out http://www.hood.edu for details.

7. So maybe Klingon doesn't count as a foreign language, but if you plan to study it at college (the Klingon language, that is), you can enter the Kor Memorial Scholarship given by the Klingon Language Institute. Familiarity with Klingon not required. Go to http://www.kli.org/scholarship/ for details.

8. Betcha' never thought you'd find a use for that paper your teacher loved on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. Guess what? Here it is: The Ayn Rand Institute awards $10,000 to the first-prize winner in its annual essay contest on the novel. Go to http://www.aynrand.org/contests/.

9. To avoid competition with David Letterman's Top 10 list, we'll offer Letterman's own scholarship the number 9 spot on our list. Ball State University in Muncie, IN offers the David Letterman Scholarship, which awards the first-place winner with $10,000 and is funded by the university's most famous alumnus. With no minimum GPA required, this scholarship is awarded based on outstanding creativity. Details are at http://www.bsu.edu/up/.

ERM... ANYONE WITH SUCH DISABILITIES? pls call 1800-SCHOLARSHIP TO FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION

LOOKING OUT FOR OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE.. THE STATE WANT YOU! YES YOU....
